With deep sorrow, we regret to announce the untimely death of our beloved Bishop, Rt. Rev. Benon Magezi, Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese. He succumbed to COVID-19 on 15th June 2021 after 2 weeks of hospitalization at Mulago Hospital.
Bishop Benon Magezi was consecrated and enthroned as the 6th Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese on 8th January 2017 at Emmanuel Cathedral Kinyasano Rukungiri.
In 2019, he launched a major project; the construction of the new Emmanuel Cathedral alongside other projects for the expansion of the Diocese and the Church Ministry.
Bishop Benon Magezi grew up in a Christian home and attended church regularly with his family. Durin a mission Sunday at his local church in 1981, he received Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Saviour and got born again. The following year he left teaching and began full-time ministry as a parish youth worker.
Prior to his election as Bishop, he served as a Diocesan Treasurer of North Kigezi Diocese and many parishes. He was ordained a deacon in December 1991 and a priest the following year. He earned a Bachelor of Divinity from the Bishop Tucker School of Divinity and Theology at Uganda Christian University, Mukono in 2009, having earned both a Certificate and Diploma in Theology from Bishop Barham Theological College in 1990 and 1998 respectively.
He is survived by his wife, Maama Gladys Magezi, and their five children.
Taata, we will dearly miss you, but we believe you are in a better place than this troubled world. Meanwhile, we shall hold onto the good memories of you and work hard to continue and accomplish the work that you have left for the expansion of God’s Kingdom, the growth and development of our Diocese and the Church Ministry.
