Bishop Onesimus Urges Hope and Redemption at Rukungiri Government Prison Confirmation Service

North Kigezi Diocese News

RUKUNGIRI – Inmates at Rukungiri Government Prison were filled with joy and happiness on Tuesday as they welcomed Bishop Onesimus Asiimwe and his team for a confirmation service and pastoral ministry in Rujumbura Archdeaconry, North Kigezi Diocese.

Bishop Asiimwe commended the inmates for their enthusiastic praise, stating, “I thank God for your praise. There is power in praise, and as you do it, let it be with your strength, knowledge, and wisdom.”

Drawing from Matthew 25:31-36, he emphasized, “Jesus knows and understands your needs as you are here. If it was not because of salvation by grace, I assure you we would all be in prison.” He urged all present to embrace salvation, declaring that “the gospel is the power of salvation to those who believe.”

Addressing the inmates directly, Bishop Asiimwe reminded them that everyone is vulnerable to sin, regardless of its scale. “You the inmates, don’t see and consider yourselves as the greatest sinners. There are many prisoners out there, and the only difference is that they have not been brought here,” he said. “You will be pardoned one day when you are convicted of your sin.”

He encouraged hope, assuring them, “Do not lose hope; our God is a miracle worker. You will not be in prison forever.” Referencing Hebrews 13:3, he added, “Coming here to see you, we come to represent Jesus Christ as He requires us to do so.” However, he warned against returning to old ways upon release.

A total of 33 Christians were confirmed into the faith during the service.

Deputy Officer in Charge ASP Wandera expressed gratitude for the bishop’s visit, noting it “attaches a lot of significance” and “gives us hope for redemption—that’s why we open the gates when you come.” He highlighted prison activities including carpentry, saloon services, and football, though materials are sometimes lacking.

Representing the male inmates, Mr. Baguma Gracious thanked the bishop for his message of hope and for “leaving the 99 sheep to seek the lost sheep.” He pledged that upon release, inmates would support gospel preaching. On behalf of the female inmates, Evelyn praised the bishop for restoring overnight radio broadcasts, enabling access to the gospel. Inmates also commended the Commissioner General of Prisons – Dr. Canon Johnson Byabashaija for his care.

Bishop Asiimwe distributed a bar of soap to each confirmed Christian and to mothers present. Mr. Alfred Rwobusheru also donated two boxes of soap to the confirmed Christians and one box to staff.

The service was attended by Acting Archdeacon of Rujumbura Archdeaconry Rev. Canon Elisha Waswa; Senior Warden of All Saints Church Mr. Muhoozi Moses; Vicar of All Saints Church Rukungiri Rev. Musinguzi Amos; Curate of All Saints Church Rukungiri Rev. Tugume Moses; and Head of Laity at All Saints Church Rukungiri Mr. Reuben Amanyire.

To God be the glory!
