Former Assistant Bishop of Kampala Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dr. Hannington Mutebi, has urged Christians to embrace humility and depend on God in all their undertakings, warning against pride and working without God.
Bishop Mutebi made the remarks while preaching at the Consecration Service of Kiigiro Church of Uganda Sub-Parish, named Philipo Orikwera Kiigiro C.O.U. in Kakinga Archdeaconry, North Kigezi Diocese
The church, which was started in 1941, was consecrated alongside the commissioning of a four-block commercial building intended to generate income for the church.
Preaching from 2 Samuel 1:7, Bishop Mutebi said there is a difference between building with dependence on God and building independently of God. He explained that building depending on God is a sign of humility, while building without God is an expression of pride.
He warned that when people build without God, they build for their own glory, which can result in frustration, disappointment, discouragement, and pain. He cited the builders of the Tower of Babel as an example of people who built with pride rather than dependence on God.
Bishop Mutebi encouraged Christians to ensure that the new church reflects the glory of God, describing it as a spiritual hospital where people can find healing from emotional, spiritual, and physical challenges. He reminded them that their contribution to the project was not in vain because Christ is the foundation on which the Church is built.
He prayed that the church would be a place where the Word of God is honoured, prayer thrives, worship and praise are offered, and people experience love, grace, healing, and hope.
Bishop Mutebi also called on Christians to examine their relationship with God and take a step of faith by receiving Jesus Christ. Many people responded to the call and received Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Saviour, marking a significant spiritual moment during the consecration service.
Speaking at the service, Bishop Onesimus Asiimwe reminded Christians that their bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. Sharing his testimony, he recalled how, after spending a night drinking and smoking, he heard God remind him that his body was the temple of the Holy Spirit. He said receiving Christ marked a turning point in his life and began his journey of faith.
Bishop Asiimwe urged Christians to avoid practices that defile their bodies and to live lives that honour God.
The Head of Laity, Benon Baryamushangayo, thanked Bishop Asiimwe for consecrating the church and pledged that Christians would continue working to grow the church, expand the commercial project, fulfil their obligations, and increase coffee production.
Hon. Mathius Rwabugumi, MP Rubabo County, commended the people of Kiigiro for their hard work and pledged continued cooperation between the government and the Church in improving people’s livelihoods and fighting poverty.
Bishop Asiimwe also assured the Christians of Kiigiro that their request to become a parish had been heard, describing it as an answered prayer and pledging to work towards granting them parish status.
