North Kigezi Bishop Onesimus Asiimwe to Celebrate 3rd Anniversary of Episcopal Ministry as Archbishop Kaziimba Bids Farewell

North Kigezi Diocese News

The Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, Onesimus Asiimwe, will on Sunday, March 15, 2026, hold a thanksgiving service to mark the third anniversary of his Episcopal ministry. The event will also coincide with the visit and farewell of the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugaku.

Bishop Asiimwe revealed this during a Press Conference held today at the diocesan headquarters on Kinyasano Hill in Rukungiri municipality.

According to Bishop Asiimwe, the Archbishop will arrive on Friday, March 13, 2026, and will be received at Kahengye in Kebisoni Town Council, at the border of Rukungiri District and Ntungamo District.

The main thanksgiving service will take place on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at the grounds of Emmanuel Cathedral Kinyasano starting at 9:00 a.m.

Bishop Asiimwe was consecrated as the sixth Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese on March 12, 2023. He was elected by the House of Bishops of the Church of Uganda on January 18, 2023, replacing the late Benon Magezi, who died of COVID-19 in 2021.

Following Bishop Magezi’s death, Archbishop Kaziimba appointed the retired Bishop Patrick Tugume Tusingwire to serve as caretaker of the diocese before the election of Bishop Asiimwe.

Bishop Asiimwe called upon all Christians across the diocese and well-wishers to attend the thanksgiving service. He noted that all churches within the diocese will remain closed on that day, and Christians are encouraged to gather at the cathedral grounds for the joint service.

He also invited all clergy in the diocese, both those still serving and those retired, to attend the function in their clerical attire.

The Bishop explained that the thanksgiving service will give him an opportunity to account to Christians and the public for the work done and the progress made in the diocese since he assumed office.

Archbishop Kaziimba, who assumed office on March 15, 2020, is expected to retire on August 18, 2027. The Vice President of Uganda, Jessica Alupo, is expected to attend the event as the Guest of Honour.
