61st Diocesan Council: Bishop Asiimwe Reshuffles Clergy and Sets 2026 Agenda

North Kigezi Diocese News

The Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Onesimus Asiimwe, has announced a comprehensive posting and transfer of clergy following the 61st Diocesan Council Meeting held at Emmanuel Cathedral, Kinyasano. The meeting brought together clergy and lay leaders from across the Diocese to reflect on the past year and set the spiritual, administrative, and mission direction for 2026.

Addressing the council, Bishop Asiimwe emphasized the central role of leadership in church growth and effectiveness, quoting leadership scholar John C. Maxwell that “everything rises and falls on leadership.” He encouraged clergy to receive their new postings with faith and obedience, assuring them that no parish is bad, but that every parish can thrive under committed, prayerful, and servant leadership.

During the meeting, the Bishop delivered his Charge for 2026, calling the Diocese to remain firmly anchored in Christ for unity, stability, and peace, in line with the Church of Uganda Theme for 2026 drawn from Ephesians 2:14–17. He led the council in remembering clergy, lay leaders, and Christians who passed on during the previous year, and reaffirmed the Diocese’s commitment to holiness, accountability, and faithful ministry.

Bishop Asiimwe outlined key priorities for the year, including strengthening leadership and governance structures, improving human resource management and staff welfare, enhancing health and education institutions, completing the registration of churches and church land, and deepening unity and peace across the Diocese. He announced that the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kazimba Mugalu, will visit North Kigezi Diocese from 14–16 March 2026, a visit that will coincide with the Bishop’s third anniversary thanksgiving for Episcopal Ministry.

The Bishop also informed the council that the tenure of delegates to the 27th Provincial Assembly will end on 30 April 2026, and that preparations will begin for the identification and election of new delegates who will serve during the 2026–2030 Provincial Assembly period. The Diocesan Synod was confirmed for 20–21 March 2026 at Emmanuel Cathedral, Kinyasano.

On international engagement, Bishop Asiimwe shared that he has been appointed by the GAFCON Primates as Regional Secretary for East Africa, overseeing seven countries. He further announced the canonical transfer of Rev. Mark Maschger from the Anglican Church in North America to North Kigezi Diocese. Rev. Maschger, a long-time friend and partner of the Diocese, is expected to join for discernment and ministry engagement beginning 1 February 2026, with plans for priestly ordination in due course.

The council approved St. James Nyamizi C.O.U, St. James Nyaburondo C.O.U, and Katungu C.O.U for elevation to parish status, pending final approval by the Diocesan Synod. It also resolved that 15 February every year shall be observed as a special Sunday dedicated to Canon Ndimbirwe Bible College, with all offerings collected on that day directed to support the college financially.

As part of efforts to strengthen ministry, administration, and mission across the Diocese, Bishop Asiimwe effected the following clergy postings and transfers:
